Vintage Flower Braided Headband

So I decided this week to expand and do a headband. Lets just say a matching Diaper Cover is in the works :) But, for the little girls without diapers and even with this Headband it ADORABLE! It is all made of yarn and easy to make. For the Pattern click Here.

Pretty Polka Princess!

With summer coming and this trend of bright color clothing I wanted to create something bright and fun! Polka Dots are one of my favorite patterns and so the Polka Dot Pattern was created! Find the Pattern HERE, find the finished product HERE.

Yarn Tips

We are going to add some crocheting "tips" that we have learned while crocheting. (We will be constantly adding more as they come to us!)

Here are some Yarn Tips!

1. There are different sizes of yarn. If you have a pattern, they usually say what size you will need. If you use the wrong size yarn, your creation could be way off!!!

2. We typically use Worsted Weight Yarn which is a medium thickness. Red Heart is a common example. It is the most commonly used and found in stores.

3. Baby yarn and Sports Weight yarn are thinner yarns. They are commonly used for booties, blankets, sweaters, etc.

4. There is a Heavy Worsted Wight, Bulky, and Super Bulky Yarns. These are thicker and can be used for some hats, Baby cocoons, and blankets. (You typically use a large hook for thicker yarn)

5. If you would like to create a thicker look using the yarns you have tie them together. Double or even triple them up! You could have a mixture of colors or all the same. Spices things up a bit!

6. To avoid knotting you can roll the yarn into a ball before starting. I do this with the thinner yarns that tangle easier.

7. Yarn is most often the cheapest at Walmart! At least the more common brands.

Pattern Tips

Here are some Pattern Tips!

1. Read patterns slowly. It is easy to miscount, misread, or skip stitches. This will cause the whole pattern to get off. You will be fine if you READ CAREFULLY!

2. BOBBY PINS! A lot of patterns work in rounds. This is going around in circles. They say to use a stitch marker to keep track of where you finish a round. Bobby Pins are fantastic markers. Plus, if you are like me I always have one somewhere!

3. Check your gauge. It tells you how many stitches/inch. This will help you stay on track.

4. Don't be too sad if you have to back track a little. It is worth it in the end!

Hook Tips

Hook Tips:

1. The smaller your hook, the smaller the stitch. The larger the hook, the larger the stitch. So..... (onto Tip #2)

2. Patterns tell you the size of hook to use. The tip we have? Check the gauge. I crochet tighter than some people or looser than some. So, I sometimes have to use a different hook to match their pattern.

3. Want a lot of hooks on a cheap budget? Used a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. They have a package of hooks from size C-J for $13.99 which comes to something like $8.40. Not bad! Plus you have the hook sizes for most patterns.

4. Baby Booties usually use smaller needles (D-E Range for newborn sizes)

5. G-H seems to be one of the most common Hook sizes for hats, diaper covers, etc.

Puff Ball Tutorial

There are many things that can have puff balls on them. Hats are a big one! Here is a tutorial on how to make a puff ball. Enjoy!

Step 1: Wrap yarn around a small cup or can around 75 times. The more you wrap, the thicker your puff ball.

Step 2: Take the yarn off the can and tie around the middle to make a figure 8.

 Step 3: Cut on both end of the figure eight.

Step 4: Fold over and trim to desired length.

Step 5: Tie to the top of the hat or other item.
